Eight in ten university students have used a scanned textbook. So where did the price of those books go? The numbers below answer.

There is no official figure for losses in Korea, so the industry estimate is marked as such. The others are quoted as published.
On one university's anonymous forum, 89 posts trading textbook PDFs appeared in the first two weeks of term. Files of textbooks costing tens of thousands of won change hands for ₩2,000–10,000, or a coffee voucher. This is not about one student. It is the gap between an expensive print book and an e-book no different from a scan.

Once a PDF is out, it makes endless copies identical to the original. When copy shops were policed, trading moved to files; when file sellers were policed, it moved to sharing rooms with hundreds of thousands of members.
Most cases were copy shops fined for illegal copying and selling.
The pattern changed. One print shop says sales fell over 70% from the binding days.
About 330,000 members and some 16,000 study books. The culture ministry caught the operator and shut it down.

268,000 members within a year. With hundreds of thousands of users, only the operator could be investigated.
Some copying cannot be stopped. Borrowing a library book and photographing it on your own phone for private study is not illegal (Korean Copyright Act, Art. 30). One library copy can become many private copies, and the publisher has no way to stop it.
Enforcement must continue. But enforcement alone does not lower what a copy is worth. · Korean Copyright Act, Article 30 — copying on machines installed for public use, and passing copies on to others, fall outside it.

A scan carries only how the page looks. linear studio adds three layers over that page that help readers understand the book. They open only on a verified buyer's account.

Tap a word and the part of the figure it refers to lights up. No more searching between text and picture.

Press ▶ and the figure draws itself in the order the text explains. It moves at the pace set with ‹ ›, then returns to the printed page.
Ask the AI where you got stuck and dig deeper. Every answer leads back to the book's own sentences and figures.
We do not promise to stop every copy. But scanning a page does not carry off a page that responds when touched and answers when asked.
A fight waged only on price and enforcement becomes one won on value found only in the original. A book you have already published becomes a premium edition you can sell anew.
The same book, understood faster and questioned more deeply. The reason to choose the original becomes ‘it helps me learn’, not ‘it's the rule’.

Vinu Labs Insight, survey of 200 Korean university students on Everytime (April 2025; the first two allow multiple answers). A small sample, so we read it for direction only. We cannot lower the price of the book, but we can change an e-book that is no different from a scan.
Studying economics meant meeting graph after graph and equation after equation. A textbook can only show why a curve moves as one finished picture; the motion in between is left for the student to imagine alone. Show that motion, and the picture that blocked understanding starts to carry it.
Motion does not always help. Results vary widely, and decorative motion does little. So the page moves only when it explains, at the pace the student sets with ‹ ›, and returns to the printed page when done.

Studies find slightly better comprehension on paper than on screen. But each figure is one finished picture — the motion is left to imagination.
Convenient, yet the figures are as still as on paper, and it looks just like a scan — price is the only reason to choose it.
It explains anything at once. But the answer comes in words; it cannot point to, or move, the book's own figure on the page.
Drawn in the order the text explains it, linked to the words. The layer linear studio adds over the printed page.
AI does not replace the book; it helps readers take the book in. So we place AI questions on the book's own page, and every answer leads back to the book's own sentences.
